Florilegium on Current Events in the Church

Tracking the news items that have come out of Rome this week, certain verses of Scripture come to mind.  Below I have listed a few, with corresponding news items linked.

"You have made my father's house a den of thieves!"
—Jesus Christ, Gospel according to St. Matthew

"But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves."

—St. Peter, Second Epistle

"They have eyes full of adultery, insatiable for sin. They entice unsteady souls. They have hearts trained in greed. Accursed children!"

—St. Peter, op. cit.

"For if I preach the gospel, that gives me no ground for boasting. For necessity is laid upon me. Woe to me if I do not preach the gospel!"
—St. Paul, First Letter to the Corinthians

"When Cephas came to Antioch, I opposed him, because he stood condemned."

—St. Paul, Letter to the Galatians

"So then, brothers, stand firm and hold to the traditions that you were taught by us, either by our spoken word or by our letter."
—St. Paul, Second Letter to the Thessalonians
